I really love watching Korean singing competition shows. Before this show came out, I enjoyed watching Queendom. Queendom was a Korean competition show with 5 top Kpop girl groups, plus Veteran power Vocal, Park Bom. They would perform different songs to prove who was at the top. It was exciting to watch because all of them were successful performers. When they talked about making a male version, I was excited to see the top male groups battle it out. However, in chats a lot of people were mentioning names of artists that were not super popular, fairly new, or just under the radar. I was disappointed. What was the point of making a male version if it was going to be way different? I watched the first episode of Road to Kingdom last week and wasn't crazy excited. A lot had to do with the fact that I didn't know the groups well, but I saw this as an opportunity to get to know new artists. Oneus opened the show with H.O.T's debut song 전사의 후예 (Warrior's Descendant). Out of these groups I probably am the most familiar with Oneus songs than the other groups. I really loved how they all have very different voices. The rappers did not change the rap line yet it sounded so different and fresh. H.O.T's song originally came out in 1996 and the boys in Oneus were born between 1995-2000 so it really shows how much impact H.O.T had on the Kpop industry way before it was cool. Here is the original song by H.O.T: Only 5 out of the 7 groups performed this week and I really loved 3 performances. Oneus, Too, and Golden Child. I'm curious to see how my feelings will change next week after The Boyz and Pentagon perform. Too is the newest group in the line up and they really did well performing Rising Sun by TVXQ, but Golden Child's version of T.O.P by Shinhwa was amazing. What I really loved about it was that the concept of the outfits were similar and they even kept the choreograph of the original. I really fell in love with Y's vocals~ It really reminded me of Shinhwa's vocal king, Hyesung! |
